The University of Montreal:
History:
Once known as the Université Laval of Montreal, the University of Montreal was founded in 1878 as a new branch of the University Laval in Quebec City. Theology, Law, and Medicine formed the only three faculties available when the university was formed. The Montreal École Polytechnique officially joined the University of Montreal in 1887 and was connected with the Arts Faculty. In 1889, the Vatican granted the university some administrative autonomy, which allowed it to select its own professors and license for its own diplomas. On 14 February 1920, the University of Montreal was granted its first provincial charter. The University proceeded to additional buildings on Mount Royal, which were created by architect Ernest Cormier, in 1943, departing the Latin Quarter remains.
